Starts

All swimmers are numbered on both arms, shoulder blades and back of hands by race officials at check in at least one hour before race start.

Feeding

Swimmers take a wide variety of liquids and gel packs during a 5km race.

A 10km race takes about two hours. Feeding stations are positioned along races but swimmers are advised to put gel packs in their swim suits to use during racing.

Coaches uses feeding sticks of various types and lenghts. Swimmers grab their cup from the feeding stick, swallow quickly and continue swimming - all within 2-3 strokes.

Make sure that  you would easily be able to identify your  feeding stick and coach when swimming towards the feeding station.

If a coach falls into the water then his/her swimmer will be disqualified.

Did you Know?

The best open water athletes are world-class 800 or 1500 meter pool swimmers who have an intense focus on open water swimming.

World-class open water athletes train an average of 90,000 meters per week during mid-season - or nearly 56 miles swimming every week. Most of the training is done in the pool in addition to weight-training and other land-based training regimens.

Acclimatization to water temperature and conditions are a critical element of preparation, whether the water is cold, warm, moving, wavy or filled with jellyfish, seaweed or junk.
