How to claim a Record

It is the responsiblity of the swimmer/coach/parent to make application for the ratification of record(s).

Record claim forms will be available from the Record's Clerk.Record claim forms are to reach the chief Record's Clerks, Mr Darryl Reid within 21 days of the date of swim.It is strongly recommended that application for a record is made at the gala.

Records can only be claimed if the event is swim in a 50m pool (long course) or 25m (short course) and if registered officials were in attendance and if the gala was hend under the auspices of EPA/SSA.

It is the responsibility of the swimmer/coach/parent to ask the Chief Timekeeperfor three (3) timekeepers on a lane should the swimmer be attempting to swim a record time.

Should a swimmer wish to claim a record from a gala held outsdie the auspices of EPA the results sheet, in the case of electronic timing , is sufficient.

All records have to be ratified by the EPA Executive. Successful claims will be noted in the EPA minutes, copies of which are circulated to the clubs.

Club Secretaries are responsibile for claiming relay records for which all of the above applies.

EPA Open Water Swimming Squad Selection Criteria

Selection Criteria EP Team

The following important information was approved by the Open Water Swimming Board at a meeting held on Wednesday, 13 October 2010.

A swimmer must:

Be registered with SSA and affiliated to a registered club within the EPA boundaries.

Swim one qualifying time in a SSA sanctioned event and swim the event at EP Championships within the qualifying time.

All swimmers that meet the selection criteria may be considered for selection as full members of the team. There is no guarantee that they will be selected.

The disciplinary record of a swimmer will be taken into consideration when selecting the team.

All selected members will be expected to abide by the management rules and EPA Rules of Conduct.

The selection of any EP Team has to be ratified by the EPA Executive before being announced.

Note that the 3km event will be an open event for Senior Nationals. Local events will still be run on an age group basis and there will be positions and medals per age group.

The local OWS Board will be working on a National Open Age Group Event that will include age groups in 5km and 10 km events to encourage our masters to swim the longer distances.

EPA Swim Challenge Series Entry Rule for Combined Events

At the swim challenge series the 3 and 5 km events are run together due to time constraints.

The following rule will be applied with regard to entries to the combined event:

If a swimmer enters the 5 km event, the swimmer can touch the finish buoy at the 3 km mark and also get a 3km time.

If a swimmer enters the 3 km event, he cannot get a 5km time. The swimmer’s race is completed when they touch for the 3km.

A swimmer can only get a position and medal in the event that he/she entered. Therefore, if we run the events combined, the official results should only show the result for the event that the swimmer entered.

EPA officials will take the times from the information recorded at the event for the SSA database for the additional 3km time for those swimmers who are registered with SSA.

Note that this rule will not apply if the 2 events are not combined.

There are a lot of interesting developments on the OWS scene that will hit us over the next 2 years. Hopefully we will start seeing some of the changes during the current season.

Ronnie Bakhuis Convener OWS Board.
